THE MIND OF OCTAVIA E. BUTLER

The Audacious Women team is developing a feature-length biographical documentary that will explore the inner life, creative processes, written work and legacy of Octavia E. Butler (1947-2006), recognized and celebrated as the first Black woman science fiction writer. The film will focus on her private and public personas, the psychological scaffolding of her life and how it influenced the thematic content of her work, and the methodologies she created to motivate and sustain herself to overcome the challenges of chronic poverty, racism, sexism, depression, dyslexia, bullying and more. A prolific writer who birthed the genre of African American speculative fiction, Butler revolutionized science fiction by incorporating topical themes into her published work, such as environmental disaster and political upheaval, while building narratives around African American female heroines who confronted racism, sexism and other obstacles as the empathetic problem solvers of the future. As Butler explained, “As a female and as an African American, I wrote myself in.”
